Approved by the FDA in 2002, Botox is one of the most common non-invasive plastic surgery procedures done today. However, many people have a number of concerns regarding the safety and usage of Botox injections. Read this overview to learn more about some of these concerns and discover why many of them are just myths:

Botox and Fillers Are the Same
Many people believe that Botox injections are the same as dermal fillers. However, Botox injections are used to temporarily paralyze specific facial muscles, stopping the nerve signals that direct your muscles to contract and wrinkle. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, use natural solutions to literally fill or plump fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox Is Dangerous
One of the most common myths behind Botox injections is that it is a dangerous chemical. Botox is actually an FDA-approved purified strain of Botulinum toxin used to eliminate a number of fine lines and facial wrinkles. While many individuals fear that the injections can be damaging the their muscles, your plastic surgeon only injects the substance into muscles that can be manipulated safely to avoid adverse effects and reduce the chances of unnatural facial expressions.

Botox Is Painful

Another myth regarding Botox is that the injections are extremely painful. This is untrue, as yourplastic surgeon will often use a topical anesthetic cream to numb the area before the injection. In some cases, your plastic surgeon may infuse an anesthetic into the serum itself to provide comfort during the injection process.

Botox Injections Are Not Long Lasting
While the results from the initial injections may last approximately four to six months, studies show that repeated injections may actually permanently weaken the muscles that cause wrinkles.

Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning, is a unique kind of surgical procedure because it can be performed on children as young as the age of 6. Unlike other features of the face, the ears develop fully early in life. For children with protruding ears, school and playtime can be difficult as other children make note of the issue. Adults may also be candidates for the otoplasty procedure with favorable results.

What Happens During Surgery
Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the preference of the patient. When the patient is at a younger age, general anesthesia may help the child feel more relaxed about surgery because he or she will be completely asleep. Typically, the surgical incisions can be made at the back of the ear, but in cases where incisions are needed on the front of the ear the doctor will disguise them in the natural folds of the cartilage. Some tissue may be removed to reshape the ear, and the new structure will be held in place by permanent internal sutures. The incision is closed using stitches, creating an immediate improvement in the placement of the ears.

Recovering from Otoplasty
For young patients, it is recommended that the surgery be performed during school breaks when adequate recovery time is available. Full recovery may take 1-2 weeks, and the process is relatively pain-free. Some minor soreness and inflammation may be seen, but this can be easily controlled with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications. You may also experience itchiness under the bandaging of the ear. It is important to keep the bandaging intact if this occurs, as the stitches may be disturbed when the bandaging is taken off at home.

Many patients are unfamiliar with medical terms, especially when it comes to plastic surgery. If you’re interested in undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure then your first step should be educating yourself on the terminology. Read through this overview on the lingo of plastic surgery to learn about some of the most common procedures:

Abdominoplasty
An abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a procedure designed to eliminate excess fat and skin from the midsection. This procedure is often beneficial to individuals following excessive weight loss or pregnancy. During the procedure, excess amounts of stretched out skin and fat tissue are moved, while weakened or separated abdominal muscles are repaired for a smooth profile.

Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty is the technical term for eyelid surgery and is often performed to correct problems that affect both the upper or lower eyelids. Some problems that can be alleviated include excess skin of the upper lids that impair vision, under eye bags that give individuals a tired appearance, and drooping lower lids that expose the white portion of the eye below the iris.

Injectable Fillers
Many individuals confuse Botox injections with injectable fillers. While Botox is used to temporarily paralyze the muscles that contract and cause wrinkles, injectable fillers work to plump or fill lines and wrinkles to restore facial volume and add structure. Also known as dermal fillers, these injections vary based on the solution used and help to even out the surface of your skin for a more youthful appearance.

Keloid
A keloid is a type of skin lesion that occurs while your skin is trying to heal, disrupting the process and allowing the continual growth of scar tissue. Fortunately, keloids can be removed during a surgical procedure in which the lesion is excised and injected with a steroid to minimize the chance of recurrence.

Tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Patients who have loose abdominal skin and fat that is concentrated in the abdomen can benefit from tummy tuck surgery. Often, pregnancy or substantial weight loss may cause abdominal skin to become stretched out and excessive. A tummy tuck also tightens the abdominal muscles that have been separated and weakened in these cases. The procedure often eliminates stretch marks that are located below the navel, as the affected skin is removed as part of the operation.

Liposuction

Liposuction surgery may be considered to treat areas of excess fat in the stomach, buttocks, hips, love handles, saddlebags, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts (including male breast enlargement), back, arms and neck. Often, patients seeking liposuction have noticed areas of fat deposit that are out of proportion with the rest of the body and do not go away with diet and exercise. Since liposuction removes fat and not skin, it is well-suited for areas with minimal amounts of excess skin and good skin elasticity.

Arm lift (Brachioplasty)

Patients seeking an arm lift, otherwise known as brachioplasty, have noticed significantly loosened upper arm skin. This can be a result of weight loss or normal aging. An arm lift removes the excess skin and fat, leaving the upper arms with a tighter contour. The incision extends from the elbow to the underarm, and sometimes onto the side of the chest. In some instances, liposuction can be used alone or in conjunction with an arm lift to remove excess fat in the upper arms.

Thigh lift

As with the arms, significant weight loss or normal aging can cause redundant skin over the thighs as well. Excess skin in the inner thigh area can cause significant chafing when patients are attempting to exercise, and many of these patients also seek improvement in the smoothness and contour. A thigh lift reshapes the thighs by removing excess skin and fat. Depending on whether the laxity is mostly in the inner or outer thigh, the location of the incision can be on the inner thigh from the groin crease to the knee, or around the top of the outer thigh.

Fat grafting

Fat injection or grafting has broad applications in cosmetic surgery. Fat injected into areas requiring volume-enhancement produces safe, long-lasting, and natural-appearing results as volume is replaced to tissues where fat is diminished. Fat grafting usually involves harvesting fat from one part of the body, washing/ purifying it, and then carefully re-injecting it into the areas requiring augmentation. The procedure may need to be repeated several times to achieve the desired result.
