Breast augmentation is one of the most common procedures performed by plastic surgeons. Women may choose to undergo breast augmentation because of breasts that are felt to be under-developed, differences in breast size, or changes after pregnancy or breast-feeding. Some women may be happy with their breasts but just want them made fuller. Often after weight loss, aging, or childbirth, a woman’s breast volume and shape may change. Augmentation can be performed with either saline or silicone implants.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Pregnancy, breast-feeding, gravity, or loss of skin elasticity can affect the shape and firmness of the breasts. Women who are generally satisfied with the size of their breasts can have a breast lift to raise and firm them, resulting in a more youthful breast contour. Some patients may have lost a significant amount of breast volume over time, and in such cases, implants can be inserted in conjunction with a breast lift.
Patients who undergo breast reduction surgery frequently are seeking relief from physical symptoms caused by the excessive weight of large breasts, such as neck, shoulder, and back pain. Breast reduction usually can solve these problems as well as improve the size and shape of the breasts. Following breast reduction, the breasts are usually more proportional to the rest of the body, and most patients report a significant improvement in their ability to be active.
Even after proper planning and execution of breast surgery, changes can occur leading to the consideration of revisionary surgery. These changes can be implant-related or from natural changes in the breast tissue such as after childbirth and breast-feeding. The most common reasons for seeking revisionary breast surgery are implant deflation, a desire to change implant (size or type), capsular contracture, implant malposition, double-bubble deformity, and combination issues. A common example of this is a previous breast augmentation patient who develops breast droopiness after having had children or losing weight. These cases need highly individualized evaluation.
